Merit Badges

Upon deciding to work towards a specific Merit Badge, the Scout must call the Scoutmaster to ensure that he concurs that this merit badge is acceptable at this time. That it is not too difficult for his age or to ensure that he is not working on too many badges at a time. The Scout should also ask if the troop has the Merit Badge book available. If not, it is the responsibility of the Scout to obtain it. Books can be purchased from the council shop or from Hall’s Arrow in Manchester.

The Scout should also ask for the name of the Merit Badge Counselor(s) for that badge. A merit badge record card will be issued to the Scout which must be presented to the counselor upon beginning to work on the badge. A minimum of two (2) Scouts must be working together with a counselor at any time. Upon completion of a merit badge, the Scout must return the completed and signed merit badge record card to the Scoutmaster for inputting to the record system. The merit badge will be awarded to the Scout at the next Court of Honor.

The Scout is expected to meet the requirements as stated--no more and no less. Furthermore, he is to do exactly what is stated. If it says "show or demonstrate," that is what he must do. Just telling about it isn't enough. The same thing holds true for such words as "make", "list", "in the field", and "collect, identify and label."

Merit badge books purchased by a Scout will be bought back from the Scout by the Troop for $1.00 each after the Scout has finished the requirements. This enables the troop to build its merit badge book library while enabling the Scout to recoup some of his monies.

Some of the merit badges has in-troop counselors. However, many more still do not. If you have any interest or experience in a merit badge subject (please see the list on the back of any merit badge book) please call the Committee Chairman for more information on how to help our boys out. Being a merit badge counselor requires little of your time and is of limited duration. If you feel you can help out with a merit badge please let us know.
